August Sander Sander quickly gained a good reputation and a plentiful clientele who trusted the photographer whose technical prowess was only surpassed by his ability to connect with his dealers. It was in once he was fully established as a studio portraitist that he undertook an ambitious project to show the Man of the Century. It is not entirely clear how Sander made the person his obsession but we do know that he had an exceptional ability to empathize with his clientele and models. The photographer decided to create a collection of types or more precisely archetypes.

His goal was to create a catalog of the human being of the new century including all social ranges from peasants to intellectuals men women children not with a scholarly disposition inspired by sociology or some theory of race but from direct observation. The photographer decided to create a typological catalog about the inhabitants stereotypesarchetypes of Germany. Although it seemed like a colossal undertaking the approach was eminently practical he approached his clients families that he already knew previously as well as spaces and environments that were familiar to him Circus workers …he really photographed what was in front of his eyes and concentrated his photographic work on the circles that were familiar to him or whose living conditions he knew well. Many of those portrayed belong to his close circle of friends such as the already mentioned group of progressives from Cologne or come from the loyal clientele who turned to him in the most diverse circumstances.
